2010/01/25 - ArcelorMittal donates 1 million USD for victims of the Haiti

Luxembourg , 25 January 2010 (11.00am CET) – ArcelorMittal, through the ArcelorMittal Foundation, announces a donation of 1 million USD to help the relief efforts in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, following the earthquake that struck the island on Tuesday 12 January. More than 100,000 people may have been killed by this 7.0-magnitude earthquake. Tens of thousands are estimated to be in need of urgent assistance.

As in previous similiar situations, ArcelorMittal is ready to help. In a first step ArcelorMittal announced already two days after this natural disaster to support an emergency intervention from the organization Médecins sans frontières (MSF) in Port-au-Prince. A donation of 100,000 USD aims to address the needs of the persons affected by the earthquake.

Today the Company increases its aid to a total of 1 million USD. This donation will be given in both cash and kind, offering assistance in new housing projects to rebuild Haiti. ArcelorMittal is also encouraging its employees to support other local initiatives in the country.

Commenting, Mr. Lakshmi Mittal, Chairman & CEO of ArcelorMittal, said: “The painful images and news of the earthquake in Haiti have shocked us all. The scale of the devastation is beyond comprehension. I would like to express my deepest sympathies to all the people affected by this tragedy. I hope with our help, and the help of others, that we will be able to bring support in rebuilding the country and aid those who have suffered.”

ArcelorMittal previously contributed to support the affected regions after the Turkey earthquake (1999), the cyclone in Myanmar (2008), the earthquake in Sichuan (2008), the Italy earthquake (2009), and the sustained support to the region affected by hurricane Katrina in the US (2005).

Luxembourg , 15 January 2010 - The ArcelorMittal Foundation announces its support of an intervention from the organisation Médecins sans frontières (MSF) for the victims affected by the earthquake in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

The Foundation will donate 100,000 US-Dollars to enable this MSF-intervention which aims to address the needs of around 70,000 persons affected by the earthquake.

"We were all very shocked when we saw what had happened during this terrible earthquake and felt we had to do something to support the population," says Felicidad Cristobal, Managing Director of the ArcelorMittal Foundation. “This is the first step taken by ArcelorMittal on a global level. We will also be encouraging other local initiatives to support the people of Haiti.”

The decision was taken by the Group Management Board only 2 days after the devastating earthquake. It is not the first time that the Company helps victims of big natural disasters like this: before Haiti, it was the case of the Italy earthquake (April 2009), the cyclone in Myanmar (May 2008), the earthquake in Sichuan (2008) and the sustained support to the region affected by hurricane Katrina in the US (2005).

The MSF intervention in Haiti will concentrate on reducing the morbidity and the mortality among the affected population in the Ouest district of the Island. The main lines of the intervention are to treat the injured, to provide primary health care to the affected population, to ensure follow up, prevention and treatment of potential epidemics diseases, to develop psycho social coping mechanisms among the affected people, to distribute non food items and to ensure access to water and sanitation for the population.
